Is there any term so infuriatingly ambiguous as ‘smart casual’? Which is it, then – smart or casual? Well, much as we hate to muddy the waters, the Welland shirt from KAVU is both. The roomy fit and long, curved hem give it that easy-days-on-the-beach vibe, but it’s also got some slightly dressier features like the faux-horn buttons, the textured slubby weave poplin fabric, and a neat button-down collar that they describe as ‘KAVU-classy’. Made in a cotton and recycled polyester mix with a touch of stretch, the Welland is wicking and UV-resistant, making it the sort of shirt that you can wear out all day, then take to a BBQ in the evening

Chest: Measure around the fullest part, place the tape close under the arms and make sure the tape is flat across the back.
Shoulder:Measure straight from the edge of one shoulder to the other at the back.
Arm Length: (A) Measure from the center back of collar to the end of shoulder. (B) Then to elbow. (C) Then down to wrist.
Neck:Measure around the neck with one finger included.
Waist: Measure around your waist where you wear your pants.

Now here’s an origin story for you. Back in the early nineties, fishing boat skipper Barry Barr was fed up with wearing cheap trucker caps that got snatched off his head in storms, never to be seen again. He decided to make a super-durable cap that wouldn’t blow off whatever the weather, and he did it by stitching the webbing material from a Teva sandal all the way around the crown. Turned out his ‘Strapcap’ was a hit, and KAVU was born.

From humble beginnings flogging Strapcaps out of the boot of his car in Seattle, Barry’s since expanded to produce a whole array of durable outdoor kit with a laid-back, van-lifer vibe. The KAVU range takes in everything from sling bags to swim shorts, and while they’re serious about producing great gear that’s made to last, they’re also not afraid to have a laugh. Their prints are bold, playful, and in some cases so loud that they’ll take some considerable chutzpah to carry off – but that’s what makes them so much fun.
