Piri piri sauce has Portuguese roots but African soul. Believed to have been invented when Portuguese settlers in Mozambique encountered the mind-blowing heat of local chillis, it’s eventually become one of the world's great hot sauce traditions. Chilli No. 5's take is built on that classic foundation: African bird's eye chilli sits at the heart of their own super-secret five-chilli mix, alongside red pepper and red onion for body, black garlic for depth, smoked paprika, oregano and ginger for warmth, and lemon and lime keeping everything bright. Smooth, citrusy and layered, with a wicked kick from the chilli. It works on just about anything, as a BBQ marinade or straight from the bottle. Between them, Rumble and Colin – one a clean-eating chilli obsessive, the other a classically trained Scottish chef – have spent years backpacking around the world, tickling their tastebuds with spicy sensations from Central America to Southeast Asia. Years of travel made the gap between authentic flavour and supermarket hot sauce increasingly hard to ignore, so they got on and did something about it.
