Three-person tents often translate to "two people plus approximately one rucksack's worth of extra space." Big Agnes' Salt Creek 3P actually fits three humans without requiring triple spooning. The three-door design means everyone gets their own entrance and vestibule space for boots and kit, whilst vertical walls create ample floor area that doesn't taper into oblivion at your head or feet. The four-way DAC hubbed pole set maximises head height – 112cm at the peak – so you can sit up without brushing your head on condensation-soaked fabric and showering your tentmates. The 3D shelf pockets above the foot area are genuinely useful for stashing headtorches, phone, and other bits you need at 3am but don't want rolling around on the floor. At 2.21kg trail weight, it's a reasonable load split three ways, and the freestanding design with colour-coded buckles means setup doesn't require a civil engineering qualification.

Big Agnes is a small, independent US outdoor brand out of Steamboat Springs, Colorado – a small ski-town that we’ve never visited but which we like to imagine is full of mountain-loving, trail-hiking outdoorsy types. That would make sense, since the company makes some of the best ultralight backpacking gear around, including the award-winning Copper Spur, Tiger Wall and Fly Creek tents. It is kit that has clearly been designed by a gang of folks who love sleeping in the dirt just as much as we do here at WildBounds.

Oh, and if you’re still wondering where the heck that name Big Agnes comes from, we did try to find out. Depending on who you talk to, it’s either an affectionate tribute to a legendary truck drivin’ mountain mama, or a 12,000 foot peak in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness. We kinda like the first one better.
