Friday Detours: 4th December 2020

Our regular round-up of outdoor lifestyle news and inspiration from across the web. This week: outdoor-loving BAME women, adventurous reads that make great gifts, the science of sweat, the people who will make 2021 better than 2020 and the launch of our Christmas gift guide.

#1 The BAME women who are making Britain’s outdoors more inclusive
Britain’s countryside remains a distinctly white and often intimidating place for BAME communities. Fortunately, outdoor-loving changemakers like Zahrah Mahmood (@the_hillwalking_hijabi), Rhiane Fatinikun of Black Girls Hike (both of whom, we’re pleased to say, featured in our list of BAME Instagram adventurers) and Omie Dale of the Black Swimming Association are seeking to redress the balance, as this Guardian report reveals.

#2 Great reads that make top Christmas gifts from Al Humphreys
We’re big fans of writer, adventurer and all-round nice guy Alastair Humphreys here at WildBounds. He was our ‘Person of the Year’ back in 2017, and we also sponsored his latest Living Adventurously podcast. And we’re loving his list of great books that make similarly great gifts for outdoorsy types this Christmas.

#3 The science of sweat
If you’ve ever spent time with gym rats or fitness freaks, you’ll have heard them go on and on about aerobic and anaerobic activity, and the critical metabolic level – basically, the point at which exercise goes from ‘easy’ (ish) to ‘hard’. Well, it turns out that’s basically wrong. This Outside piece breaks it down simply, explaining the latest sports science and how to apply the findings on your next lung-busting trail run.

#4 Movers, shakers and innovators
It's been a tough year, and we’re all hoping 2021 will be a better one. Here’s a rundown of the people who are most likely to make it happen, compiled by a panel of the world’s smartest minds, from Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai to human rights lawyer Amal Clooney

#5 Your Christmas list. Sorted.
Here’s an unashamed plug for our 2020 Christmas Gift Guide, which features hundreds of awesome products and multiple collections of brilliant gift ideas for pretty much anyone. We’ve also broken it down by price, so we’ve got you covered whether you’re looking for small stocking stuffers or an extravagant gift for your better half. We’re actually pretty proud of it – sorry (not sorry).
