Fold-flat camp stove based around an ultra-reliable spirit burner
The Kaen is Snow Peak's take on the old-school alcohol burner – a simple, reliable camp stove that's remained perennially popular since the 1950s. This being Japan's most exacting gear brand, their version is a thing of beauty, made in sleek and pretty much indestructible top-quality stainless steel. Designed to run off bioethanol, it's got a flame regulator (also known as a simmer ring) to control the heat, and a neat little pair of tweezers so you can adjust it without burning your fingerprints off. The Kaen burner sits at the centre of a few different Snow Peak camp cookers, and this one is the Koen stove – a clever little origami windshield/trivet that packs down flat then slots together in seconds when you fancy a quick brew. At 280g for the full set-up, it's a fantastic lightweight option for one or two people.

Snow Peak's journey began in 1958, when the founder Yukio Yamai, an accomplished mountaineer, created his own line of superior climbing gear. Snow Peak then looked to evolve by shifting its focus from the mountaineering equipment of the past to the camping equipment of the future. Fueled by the booming national interest in auto-camping sweeping across Japan, Snow Peak released a series of radically innovative products which focused on quality, functionality, timeless-durability and considered design.
