Ortlieb pretty much wrote the book on expedition-grade waterproof duffels. Tough as old boots, we've taken them snowshoeing in the Norwegian arctic, on safari in Botswana, and pretty much everywhere in-between. This latest version boasts that same dependable Ortlieb resilience, but in a lightweight PU-coated nylon fabric that shaves 25% off the weight. Access to the interior is via a lockable waterproof zip with a chunky T-pull and jam-protection function, and you've also got an external zip pocket for smaller odds and ends. The comfortable backpack straps do double duty as grab handles, or you can remove them completely if you need to streamline the bag for stowage in a roof rack or locker. The first Ortlieb bag was invented in Germany in 1981, after founder Hartmut Ortlieb got back from a very wet bikepacking adventure in (you guessed it) Southern England. Inspired by tarpaulins he’d seen lashed on the truck beds of lorries, he fashioned a pair of bike panniers from red truck tarp, which he stitched at home on his mother’s sewing machine.
A year later he founded his own company, buoyed by early success and positive feedback from friends. In the following years, young Hartmut came up with a series of innovations that would define the modern drybag, using high frequency welded seams and roll-top closures. He even developed the first self-locking mounting system to attach panniers to bike frames.
